Maintaining Your
Grotto Guide Status

Alas, few things in life are permanent — including your Grotto Guide status. Fortunately, it is not at all difficult to maintain your Guide status for as long as you need it.

To maintain your Grotto Guide status, you must:.

• Maintain your Active leadership-level status with at least one major dive training organization.
• Maintain current professional liability insurance for dive leadership.
• Have dived the Grotto at least once in the past 24 months.

Obviously, the first two requirements are the same as they are for first achieving Grotto Guide status. It is the last one you should be aware of as key to maintaining your status.

Since taking over operation of the Grotto at the start of 2007, we have constantly engaged in a program of upgrades and changes. The Grotto you remember from today won’t be the same as you see two years from now.

That’s why you need to visit the Grotto at least somewhat regularly, to stay abreast of these changes. And what happens if you fail to do so? We deal with that on a case-by-case basis.

• A lapse of a month or so may not be such a big deal.
• If you allow several years to pass, however, between visits to the Grotto, we may ask you to retake the academic portion of the Guide Orientation — or even make a dive with us to see what has changed.
